Can I Replace My Cracked Sony HDTV LCD Screen Myself?
My Sony Bravia KDL46XBR2 LCD HDTV (46" LCD HDTV) screen cracked after it took a hit from a falling lamp. I paid 99 @ Fry’s Electronics. A replacement screen from Sony cost’s 69. I contacted several Sony Authorized/Certified Repair shops and they told me it wasn’t worth fixing, but they mark up the price of the part and then won’t disclose their labor rates or fees for replacements, just that they will charge me 0 to bring it in to "check it out" and then that they can’t tell me how much they charge for labor. I’m busy, I don’t have time to load a 46" 100 lb television into my car and drive somewhere so some idiot can charge me 0 to tell me that my screen is cracked, I would be the idiot in that scenario! I I’m a bright young guy, can I order the replacement screen and replace it myself? Is there somewhere that will replace it and not tell me I’m out of luck? I know it’s costly, but if the cost of the screen is half the cost of the tv and the labor isn’t 00/hr?

Highly suggest you not try this yourself. Plasma and LCD displays are built in a complicated matter, and are very sensitive. If the screen is $1000, it might be better to buy a new set. However, if you don’t I would suggest you pay the $100 to have the people check it out. Just because you order a new screen from sony…doesn’t mean that your set is repairable, they’ll be able to at least make that judgement. If the $100 is too steep for you, then look aruond, get different opinions. There’s plenty of places out there that will give you free quotes and will COME OUT to your home to do so. Check some more places, and I’m sure you’ll save some $$$
Unless you are really familiar with electronics. I don’t think you should attempt to replace it yourself. You could do something wrong and damage the new LCD or even worse hurt yourself.
Try to get an estimate on how much labor will cost, but it might just be worth it to take a loss and just buy a new tv.
Never attempt anything yourself unless you are a qualified professional! If you do something wrong, you could end up burning down your house.
